kids craft: nature relief sculpture

I think the best projects for kids are the ones that are the most fun to make. The more I create with Zia, the more I realize that it’s all about the experience of doing it – not the finished product. Which is really good for me to realize – me, the artist who dreads creating my own works just because they probably won’t turn out good enough.

We had such a great time making this one. It’s almost like a treasure hunt when you’re looking for natural materials – you never quite know what you’ll find, and what you happen to find is really what shapes your art. The tactile nature of sticks, stones, and plants also adds to the experience. I’m learning not to be afraid of things that wither – it just adds an element of surprise when you see that your art has become a little different, all by itself.

Have you made art with “outside stuff”? If so, I’d love to hear about it. If not, get out there and do it – it’s too much fun not to!
