unschool bits and pieces

Our butterfly larvae is here! All five of our little critters came alive and well.

The  caramel-like stuff on the bottom is their food…which they seem to really enjoy.

Overnight, they spun quite a bit of silk to help themselves move around their cup. In 7-10 days, they should start to form their chrysalides – and then the fun begins!

Unrelated to butterflies…

today was cold enough for our first wood fire. Dadda rocked it out!

Unrelated to wood fires…

Caleb made a lava lamp. Because of the cold this morning, the oil/water/food coloring mixture is not quite as fluid as it should be.

But it’s still way cool.

Here is another of Caleb’s experiments. It’s a little hard to make out, but those are DNA strands he created in the jar, using pea protein, papaya enzyme, detergent, and rubbing alcohol.

In the meantime, Zia made a little tree.

A stick from the yard, a base of clay, and pom-pom leaves made the perfect little fall aspen.

We also got the idea to create this little whale from a kid’s project magazine:

Ooops – forgot the mouth! But Zia loves him just the way he is and insists we leave him mouthless.

Silly girl.
