band recital and a year of change

Caleb’s school had a band and orchestra recital Thursday. He plays trumpet, and the band did great. Their rendition of a song from Pirates of the Caribbean was especially awesome.

I was looking back over the photos from his first recital in April, and just thinking in general about all the changes since Caleb came to live with us almost a year and a half ago. He’s grown from being a bouncy little boy to a strong young adult–quiet and serious on the outside, but still light and funny on the inside.

Even his photos reflect that change. Here he is with Zia just one year ago, when we were moving to the mountains. They are cracking themselves up in the moving truck as we are about to leave the condo in Lakewood.

Funny, right? In just one year, he’s grown up so much. But actually, we’ve all grown. Zia’s about a head taller, and we have a new little Cash who was just a wish and a prayer those few short months ago.

As for David and me, we didn’t realize how much we would gain in love and understanding this year. You think you’re fine, and then you realize you’ve got just a little bit more to learn.

It hasn’t been an easy year, but I can say for sure, it’s been a good year.

Agree… the hard lessons are the ones that are good and worthy and important. Everytime we have had hard things, God has taght us so very much that we can’t help but be thankful for the struggles. And Yes goodness Caleb looks a few years older, not just one. Did he move in with you all when you moved?

Actually…we moved because he came to live with us! He came for the summer and we all squeezed in the condo. When he said he’d like to stay, we knew we had to find a bigger place–especially since we started out homeschooling him. Of course, having a house ended up being a really great thing for all of us.
