oreo turkeys and carousel rides

These little turkeys are terribly unhealthy–and lots of fun to make.  We found them here, and Zia decided to make them for the annual Thanksgiving dinner in Nederland.

I made red, yellow, and chocolate frosting to stick the pieces together and add features to the turkeys.  Zia put them together…for a while.  Then she got tired of it and ran off to play, and you-know-who was left finishing the turkeys.

We couldn’t find candy corn for the tail feathers and beaks, but fruit-shaped gummies worked well as a substitute. Plus, you know–the kids get an extra serving of fruit.  Of course, we had to give up the serving of corn, so we came out even.

We brought our little turkeys and a big salad to the Thanksgiving dinner yesterday.  Volunteers cooked up 40 turkeys, and everyone brought sides.  I think I mentioned last year that the dinner feeds the homeless folks of the surrounding area, along with us who have our own homes and probably another turkey dinner to come.

It was nice to be back with the hippies.  Our new neighborhood in Gilpin County is beautifully devoid of pot, and inhabited mainly by gruff cowboys.  But people in Ned are just happy, you know?  We don’t ask why.

There was live music and kids whirling everywhere.  Zia played with her friend Perrine and the other kids.

Caleb hung with his best friend Bastian. Between the two of them, several plates of food were demolished.

I hung out with my best friend, too. 🙂

People were waiting for seats, so we didn’t stay long.  After dinner, we headed to the best place to go right after you eat…

the carousel! Wheeeee…

The Carousel of Happiness hosts an afternoon of free rides each year, and this was the day.  We rode till we were dizzy and our bottoms were sore.  Well, not me, but someone else was.  I don’t want to embarrass him by mentioning his name.

So I’ll just show his picture instead.  You can see how thrilled he looks on that moose.

Still, these two are pretty adorable.

I’m leaning forward here because I’m taking a picture of moi, not because I’m sore.  I have a very tough, hard bottom (right, Mimi?) Or at least I used to.

This might look like a giant nose, but it’s a pig ear. Along with my leg, skirt, and the whole pig, which I am riding.

Sore buns aside, we all had a fun time in our old stomping grounds.

What are your plans for Thanksgiving?

I love to see the different ways people celebrate the holidays. It’s wonderful to see that you’re teaching your children what a blessing it is to have a warm meal and a roof over their head and that not everybody is so fortunate. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!! : )
