the trees are alive

Ever since we moved here a year and half ago, I’ve been trying to get a picture of a Stellar Jay. They are electric blue with a black crested head, and I think they are incredibly beautiful. They’re also very shy, and every time I so much as raised my camera, they would take off.

Until this morning.  Zia spotted a tree full of them, chattering madly and hopping around from branch to branch.  I ran out and got a few pictures, and they didn’t seem to care.  I was surprised that they completely disregarded me–it must be mating season.

My biggest surprise came when I downloaded my photos.  WHO is that sitting to the right of the tree?

I’ve never seen an owl here, but now I’m sure they’ve been right outside our door all along.  This poor dude was probably trying to sleep amidst all the chatter.  Now I’m just waiting to discover a mountain lion crouched in one of my photos!

Note: The past few days there have been reported sightings of a mountain lion at the bottom of our road.
