odor in the court

Well, I tried not to make a stink.

It all started when I received a summons for jury duty several weeks ago. June 1st was the dread day, so off we went to the courthouse. As soon as I could, I took babe in to see the judge, and requested exemption for being a mother with a nursing child. I quickly found out that wasn’t a valid excuse. I was given the option to have my jury duty postponed for a few months, but I decided not to – once you’re there, and you’ve waited a few hours, you just want to get the thing over with.

Since num-nums aren’t easily detatchable, babe patiently waited outside the courtroom (along with her Dadda) for almost 12 hours. Have I mentioned that I married the world’s greatest man? (Naturally, I also have the world’s greatest baby.)

So as I said, I tried not to be difficult, but how could I help it? The case involved individuals versus a corporation, and after watching a very interesting film a couple of months ago, corporations are just not my cup of tea. And not only that, but I also have seared into my fibers the landmark homeschooling case of Delconte vs. the State of North Carolina. So you see, I have a bit of a soft spot for the small individual versus the gigantic institution.

For yesterday’s case, that was a double whammy – and it was only fair to inform the court of my bias. I think they got tired of me after a few soapbox orations- “Number 10, does this comment have anything to do with what you’ve already said?”  In other words, shut up and be quiet. We’ve already scratched you from this jury.

Well, I guess that’s ok with me.

Just before 7 pm, we were finally informed that I had not been selected (hmm… I wonder why not?) and our very tired trio headed home sweet home.

The whole experience of sitting in court all day made me very happy I’m not a judge, or a lawyer, or a criminal, or (whew!) a juror.
