new bookshelves

A room without books is like a body without a soul. -Cicero

Our home finally has a soul.  We have bookshelves!

And books.  Since moving here in September, our books have been shut up in the shed–all 15 boxes of them, heehee.  Zia has moaned for our books so many times, and all we could do was go to the library to try to quench her book-thirst.

But two weeks ago we went to American Furniture and found solid wood bookshelves for a rocking price. We picked out one large and two narrow ones. They have cubby shelves and open backs, and the bottom row on the large one has 3 drawers instead of shelves. Ever since they were delivered yesterday morning, Zia has only left them to eat, sleep, and go to class.

I moved the furniture around to fit the shelves in, and I really like the change.  These pictures make our house look huge, but it’s actually just a nice cozy size.  The open floor plan and cathedral ceilings make it feel really spacious for the square footage.  Every day I look around and can hardly believe how incredibly blessed I am with my home.  I love it so much!

Unpacking those 15 boxes was like moving day all over again.  The books fit beautifully.  We even have a cubby for library books and one for board books. We have sections for picture books, chapter books, fiction, non-fiction, story collection books, arts and crafts, nutrition and fitness, homebirth and babies, schoolbooks, writing, magazines, and books on animals and nature.

We put the other narrow bookcase in our bedroom upstairs. It’s not actually a bedroom anymore, since we’ve moved the mattresses out into the loft. We moved them to keep warm at night during a cold snap, but it’s so nice and cozy we’ve just kept them there.

So now we have this very nice open room for reading, playing, sewing, writing, and whatever else we need it for. We got the rug two weeks ago at American Furniture. It was a floor model, but we rented a rug cleaner and David cleaned it till it fairly sparkled.

It’s so great to have books in our house!  It changes the whole atmosphere. I am super excited about our shelves, can you tell?

Me and mah books.

And then, in the midst of reveling in the newly found soul of our home, this boy poured cheerios all over the room.

And thought it was very funny.

Glad you guys liked the “resting” pose. I endured a lot of flack from David once he saw it–“Who relaxes with their foot perfectly perpendicular to the floor?” I had to explain that it’s pretty hard to relax every muscle when you only have 10 seconds to set up the camera, race to the couch, grab a book and strike a pose. The foot might be a dead giveaway, but at least I’m not holding my book upside down, lol.
