the best of friends

“Chub and Sissy…together again, the best of friends.”

That’s what Zia crooned under her breath this morning as she popped out of her little bed next to mine and snuggled in beside Cash.  She somehow acquired the nickname “Sissy” when she became a big sister, and Cash is affectionately known as “Chub” to both Zia and Caleb (I wonder why?)

This weekend we bundled Chub in the stroller for the very first time and went for a walk.  We haven’t gotten a baby stroller for him, since the Moby Wrap has been much more conducive to our bumpy dirt mountain roads.  But I still have the jogging stroller I snagged for $5 at a garage sale when Zia was little, and I realized Cash is probably big enough to ride in it without flying out when we hit a bump.

He loved it.  He must have thought it was a tiny car just his size as we buckled him in and went careening down the road, and he was asleep in a minute.  As for me, I felt incredibly light–it’s been over a year since I’ve gone for a walk without an extra body on or in me.  It was a truly great feeling.  I’m not sure how many more stroller rides we’ll get in, since the weather is starting to turn cold and the Moby is much more snuggly in the biting winds, but I’ll pop him in every warm day we get.

Caleb has a week off school, and he opted to hang with us this vacation rather than head back to NM.  Zia is having a blast with him–in reality, I think it’s actually Sissy and Caleb that are the best of friends.  I’m not sure what she would do without him, and although I’m sure he could think of lots of things to do without her, he willingly submits to hours of 5-year old play–probably more aptly termed torture.

We did a final pre-Thanksgiving run to Boulder today for such necessities as whipping cream, cranberries, and a ham.  Tomorrow we’ll be here–snug and cozy–filling our kitchen with yummy sights, smells, and tastes as we chop, whip, bake and brine.  I’m really more excited about the making process than the eating, although that will be a close second.

Hope you are having a great week!
