forest exploration

We donned caps and packs and headed into the forest today.  Zia was thrilled at the prospect of a little outdoor adventure, and Cash, as usual, was just happy to be included.

Ready to go!

This cute little chipmunk hitched a ride on my back.

We found this heart-shaped rock on the trail into the forest.

Wild mountain roses are everywhere.  Zia kept trying to tell me they were roses, but I didn’t believe her until we looked it up back at home.  She was right.

Beautiful, ay?

Lichens are a combination of algae and fungus–unlike moss, which is a plant.  Deer, elk, and moose are some of the animals around here that feed on it.

We came upon a house in the woods…oops–that’s our house.

The ponderosa pines are budding!

We found moose scat everywhere.

Snack time–wild salmon from her backpack.

My new barefoot shoes were great in the woods.  Verrryyy quiet.

Heading home.

The Adventures of Pippi and Chub…to be continued!
