While we were in NY, Mimi and some of us kids drove up to Southwick Beach on Lake Ontario.  Southwick has a feel like the ocean–wild and windy.  Lake Ontario is the 14th largest lake in the world, the easternmost of the five Great Lakes. Its source is the Niagara River and its outlet is the Atlantic Ocean, by way of the St. Lawrence River.  Southwick was always our favorite beach to camp at when we were kids.

Now we have kids of our own, and it was so cool to take them there.

The boys pitched three tents and made a fire.

Hansy got a little carried away and pulled a tree into the fire.  Somebody put a chair on the tree for a nice toasty seat.

We played Frisbee on the beach. Here’s me, the crazy howling Frisbee-throwing woman.

Uncle Seth.

It was cold and windy the first day, and that evening it rained. We bundled up in our tents and waited it out.

Here we are, bleary-eyed and shivering.

These two were quite chipper.  It was all we could do to keep them from racing in and out of the rain, tracking mud into the tent.

We ended up laughing, singing, and acting way too silly.

The next day was a little warmer, but still too cold to go in the water.

Mimi and the kids played on the beach…

while Kirke and I sunbathed–er, cloudbathed.  Brrrrrr.  See that pile of sand on the blanket?  That’s where Cash gave Mimi a sand bath.  Ooooooh.

Cash, Seth, and Mimi.  Cash was missing Dadda, and finally snuggled up to Seth.  I guess he was the next best thing. 🙂

We had such a great time at Southwick.  Even though it was a little cold, the wind and waves were amazing.  Colorado has great mountains, but is sorely lacking in beachy waves, and I’ve missed them.

Stay tuned for the next NY episode!
