6 weeks old!

Cash Laredo is six weeks today. Our midwife came for the final postpartum visit to see our boy and weigh him. He’s still a little peanut: just under 10 lbs, including his fat cloth diaper and clothes. He looks big and tough in his little hat and shirt, but that’s only because they are 3 sizes too big.

A year ago this month we moved into this house. I said: “The only thing that would make this place more perfect would be a little baby bouncing behind me in a backpack while I hike up and down the road.”

Now Cash is here, and he’s sweeter than I could have imagined. He’s a boy through and through, and so different than Zia was even at this age. He’s calm and cuddly and doesn’t demand anything. Even when he wakes in the night to nurse (and fill up those acorn-pouch cheeks), he only gives little growls and squeaks until he finally rouses me.

He gets upset for a couple of hours a day before bedtime, but I know that will pass soon. Even when I’m dead tired, I remember that these baby days and nights are so short in the course of a lifetime, and I want to stop and savor every hour of them.

Happy 6 weeks, my red-headed chipmunk boy!
