salt spa

I first read about salt therapy just after Cash was born, and I’ve been wanting to try it ever since. It’s good for allergies, asthma, chronic cough, and nearly any other type of respiratory problem. Since salt is antibacterial and antimicrobial, it kills mold, bacteria, and other funk, and when you breathe salt in, it begins to loosen and liquify mucus and toxins lodged in your respiratory system. (More about that here.)

I don’t have anything severe, but I have had a persistent cough for the past several years that I would love to leave sitting in the dust.  When I found out Boulder has a salt spa, I made up my mind to go as soon as Cash was old enough.  Last Friday I went for my first session.

Besides the main spa room, there is a room for families with children (pictured here), with 2-3″ of loose Himalayan pink salt on the floor and a machine blowing salt into the air.  They let me take Cash in for the first 45 minutes, then David came and picked him up for the second 45.

When I set Cash on the floor, he let out a long growl and dove for the salt.  He completely ignored all the toy trucks and sand toys and dug in until he got tired.  He nursed to sleep, and I almost fell asleep too–it was incredibly relaxing.

After David came to pick Cash up, I went into the main salt room (top photo).  The walls are completely encrusted with a thick layer of salt, and there is loose salt on the floor and a machine blowing salt particles into the air.  They dim the lights and play soft instrumental music while you relax in a recliner with a blanket.

It was an odd feeling to be there without my kids, just relaxing, and it took a little while to wind down.  I felt like I should be getting something done, you know–taking advantage of having both hands free and no chubby bodies wrapped around me.

That night in bed, I felt a fresh, beachy feeling as I breathed.  It felt so good.  I went for my second session Saturday–without the baby–and again Tuesday.  David took the kids around Boulder, and Cash was fine– he probably didn’t even think of me for the two hours we were apart.

They say it takes several sessions close together to see a difference in your health.  I’m doing more sessions over the next couple of weeks, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens to that crankety ol’ cough!

So cool! I’m going to see if my dad is interested in this…all of my life he’s dealt with allergies and every since I can remember, he’s had a persistent cough.
