hello crystals, goodbye butterflies

A couple of weeks ago, Caleb got a crystal growing kit at the science shop in Nederland. He mixed up some potions and set them on the counter. We watched them change and grow each day, until they finally became 2 beautiful, sparkly crystals.

Here’s the amethyst.

It’s a sweet, grapey purple. Caleb started it on a plain rock from the forest (top photo, in the middle).

Here’s the quartz. It has really cool symmetrical formations poking out all over it.

On a sadder note, our first butterfly has died. They had a good long life of 4 weeks, which is about their maximum lifespan.

You know, butterflies make great pets. They’re super quiet, they live on a few drops of sugar water, and they exercise all by themselves. I think we’ll raise them again sometime.

For now though, we have a couple of nice sparkly rock pets to keep us company!
