bricks, mud, and edible flowers

As I said in the last post, I’ve been out in the garden for the past couple of weeks, since we got our sweet truckload of organic soil!

Today’s post shows the progress of the front garden. I don’t have “before” pictures, but suffice to say the jumble of weeds under our front windows was anything but pleasant!

Here’s the dirt on the dirt: I spread it around between the house and the walk, to the right and left of the front door. To the right, I added some slightly raised beds, bricked them in, and put in a little path of pavers. To the left I extended the paver-path just a little (for the mailman) and added a little sunburst of bricks under the hose to help control the excess water, and also for a place for the hose to rest while watering. In the end, I also added 3 field stones (under the lemon balm pots pictured above) to give the hose a little more space.

Last year we got a bunch of unused pavers and bricks for free. With all the Missouri mud that surrounds us this spring (and every spring) they really help keep things from being a total mudslide!

After I finished the dirt-hauling and brickwork, I sowed some shasta daisies in the large area to the left surrounding the hose, and also in the smaller raised beds to the right. In the spaces around the raised beds and the curvy walk, I sowed curly blue kale, and along the edges, nasturtiums.I couldn’t make up my mind between practical veggies and pretty flowers, so I opted for both: prettyย and edible plants.

Ok, so maybe daisies aren’t edible. But the kale and nasturtiums will definitely be both edible and ornamental!

The problem is that once I eat my edibles, they are no longer very ornamental.

More pics of the front garden when it turns from brown to green!
