into pots

Our seedling tomato plants were bulging at the seams of their tiny plugs, so Zia and I repotted them into four tubs. I’m not sure how long the tubs will hold them, but at least they have room to spread out, and we can still drag them in and out of doors. I’ve heard our last frost is in June up here…so we may be growing tomatoes indoors for a while.

We also started some herbs–oregano, basil, tarragon, caraway, coriander, parsley, savory, onions. Can you tell I love herbs? I do wish I had thyme seeds, one of my favorites. But I’ll pick up a packet…I still have time. šŸ™‚

I started this peppermint from one tiny clipping a few months ago, and it’s finally taking off. People are always complaining abut how peppermint takes over and spreads like crazy. I don’t think I would care if my whole yard were peppermint…I love it. Those are tiny basil sprouts around it. I’ll replant some around my tomato plants when they get a little bigger, to boost the flavor.

My girl was a big help. She had her own shovel and worked like mad, and kept saying what great gardeners we are. I hope she’s right. I’m a little tentative about this mountain climate and the shortness of the growing season. But the truth is, I love to grow little sprouting things and get all dirty, whether or not I get a bumper crop out of my efforts. It’s kind of like raising kids, you know…you do it for the pure joy of it.

Hmm…I’ll have to try lavender. I started one from a root (I sent away for) in Kansas City, and I think it completely died…so disappointing. Maybe it was too humid for it there. Too humid for me, that’s for sure! šŸ™‚
