Poco Mountain Girl

It’s been a while since I’ve painted a cord burning box.  I just did this one for a midwife in Indiana, and sewed up a batik bag to go with it.

This particular midwife asked for some specific colors for the box and bag and mentioned that she liked the lotus box I painted last year.  I came up with this new design for her. It’s a floating lotus on one side and a little bud on the other.

Besides a little mending here and there, I haven’t sewn in a long time.  I actually had to blow dust off my machine. 🙂 I made a leaf applique on the bag to go along with the lotus theme.

Here are more boxes I painted that went to Haiti and Uganda almost two years ago, and this is one I made for Kristine, my midwife for Cash.

Kristine is my connection with other midwives for the boxes. She has a website, Sacred Severance, where you can learn more about cord burning if you’re interested.  We did it for Cash instead of cutting his cord, and it worked out really well.  It’s a good safeguard against infection, and the cord heals up fast.  It was also nice to not have a clamp or shoestring attached to him for those first few days. 🙂
