just born

We are so happy to announce the birth of our baby boy, Cash Laredo Lucero!

Cash was born at 2 pm on Monday July 30, 2012–two days before his due date.

He is beautiful, strong, and healthy. We love him!

We had an amazing water birth at home. My labor began at 10:30 pm July 29, and lasted a total of 15 1/2 hours. It was 12 hours shorter than my labor for Zia, but still pretty intense. I was incredibly relieved when I finally reached into the water and lifted out my 7 lb. baby boy!

I labored alone for the first few hours, then David was with me as it grew more intense in the morning hours. Our friend and doula, Cindy, came in during transition.

Here she is with Zia and Cash. Cindy was such a great help during labor, helping me to relax through the contractions and telling me I was doing great.

David was incredible. I don’t have words to describe how he helped me through it all. I really couldn’t have done it without him. He stayed steady with me for hours and hours right through to the birth, and has served me tirelessly since then. He won a medal in my heart.

Kristine is my midwife. I liked her before, but I love her now. She kept herself invisibly in the background and let me birth exactly the way I wanted to.Ā  I asked for her toward the very end, and the second I wanted her, she was there.

Kristine cauterized the cord (with Papa and Zia helping) with candles to sever and seal the ends. Cash was calm and alert for the ten minutes it took to separate him from his lifelong nutrition source.

Zia was in and out during most of the labor. She was so happy and excited that she was finally going to meet this mystery baby–and she was completely thrilled to find it was a boy!

When I knew my baby was finally about to make an appearance, I sent Zia to get Mimi and Papa. They were there in an instant, and we all welcomed that new life together.

We called big brother Caleb to tell him, and he was delighted to have a brother. Now we’re just waiting for Caleb to come home and make our little trio of sweet kids complete. We’re so thankful and blessed to have each one of them. Welcome to the tribe, Cash!

Let me add my love and joy and congratulations on the safe delivery of your beautiful new boy! Like everyone else, I’ve been checking your blog, and I had a feeling on Monday that something was up since you had fallen silent. I am so glad that you were able to have the kind of birth you wanted at home, with your family surrounding you, and that both you and Cash are doing so well.

And congratulations to Zia as well for becoming a big sister!

Now I hope your newly-expanded family gets time to cocoon for a while and get to know one another. And may Caleb get to join you soon!

    With love,

    Nancy

PS You and your mother look so much alike, both beautiful.

Congratulations, Mia! Cash is beautiful! I had my own home birth just a couple months ago. Wanted to do a water birth, but after an hour of pushing, my midwife decided that wasn’t working for me, so I ended up giving birth on our bed. I LOVED having a home birth! So glad midwifery is legal in Colorado. šŸ™‚
