easy peasy cozy poncho

We love to drive with our windows wide open, especially on these hot, hot days.  But for Zia in the back seat, the wind can be a little too strong, and she ends up shivering and huddled under a blanket. I decided a cozy poncho would solve the problem: she could slip it easily over her head (even in her car seat) as soon as she gets cold.

I found a scrap of yard sale fabric in my stash (thanks, Granny!) a yard and a half of 60″ wide red jersey interlock. I folded it in half lengthwise to get the most fabric in front and back, then folded it again and cut it to round the corners. I cut a small circle for the neck and turned it under with a zigzag stitch to stabilize it.

And just like that, it was finished.  Easy peasy. I didn’t even bother to hem the outer edge, since jersey knits hold their edge so nicely without fraying.

It’s big enough to completely cover Zia when she’s sitting. She can tuck her toes under it, and sometimes she even wears it over her head when it’s especially windy in the car. Definitely cozy.

Best of all, it turned out big enough for me…yay! It’s very comfy over this big belly, and it should be great for nursing under on chilly fall days.

Besides, it just makes one feel special to walk around in a bright red cape.
