happy birthday, zia!

My red-headed Indian girl turned five today.

Sadly, I am wondering if five might just be the official end of babyhood

and the beginning of a whole new world, where the horizons go beyond that sweet encirclement of Mamma’s love and kisses.

Here she is checking on the squirrel skin she and Dadda are curing.

Her Indian princess outfit was donned the moment she opened it, and worn all day.

Grandma and Grandpa also sent a big box of beautiful gifts: a flute, bow and arrow, moccasins, headdress, and a dancing, singing card that was very entertaining.

She decided on the Sundance Cafe for her birthday dinner, and when she told the hostess she was five today, she got to feed the already well-fed fish.

She ordered a full-size buffalo burger, since it seemed like the one item on the menu an Indian princess should choose (Dadda got the onions).

We made an Indian pony cake, using Tiffany’s recipe for Whole Wheat Vanilla Cake and Vanilla Frosting, which we turned into chocolate. So very yummy.

And there was chocolate ice cream, of course–twice in one day.

Every year, I think about how happy I am to be this girl’s mamma. Really, I think about it every day, but her birthday makes me think just a little more.Ā  And though I want to shower her with presents and all things good and sweet and lovely, mostly I know I just need to be there for her, day in and day out–loving her, working and playing with her, holding her close. And not forgetting to let her fly.

Happy birthday, sweet girl.
