meet charlotte

Finally, I’ve gotten around to posting pictures of this doll. It’s the first knitted toy I’ve made, and it’s from my favorite knitting book, Weekend Knitting. The body and clothes are 100% cotton yarn, and the hair is a very soft spun bamboo. It still twists my brain that yarn can be made of bamboo.

I finished it on Christmas Day, for Zia. The girl approved. “I’ll call her Charlotte,” she said, as soon as I placed her in her arms.

We’d been reading Little House in the Big Woods, and a couple of weeks earlier had come to the part where Ma made Laura a soft doll for Christmas. Laura named her Charlotte, because she thought it was the most beautiful name in the world.

When I read that part, Zia had said “I would like you to make me a doll, and I would call her Charlotte.”  Well, of course I did, and she did. One of those things that actually works out just as planned.

Here she is from the back with her little pigtails. I’m hoping desperately this hair won’t be snipped off with the baby scissors. “Because it won’t grow back” I emphasized rather strongly.

The hair was really a breeze to make; the whole back of the head is knitted in the hair color, so the “skin color” doesn’t show through…ingenius, ay? All in all, she took me about 4 leisure knitting days and one full-on knitting day (en route to Santa Fe, so I had a whole day).

Now she’s right at home with us, and is duly loved, though she gets flung around by a leg or arm quite often. She takes it beautifully, though; it’s all in a day’s work for a rag doll.

It is BEAUTIFUL! If you ever feel the need to sell one, you’ve got a buyer! I love dolls like that. It’s too bad we don’t see them around too often. I bought alissa a raggedy Anne and Andy set for Christmas and she loves them.

    Hey Tracy,
I’m glad you liked the doll! I am preparing to open a small online shop for my handmade things, so I’m very interested in everyone’s feedback. And, both now and when the shop is open, I’m always taking custom orders…so if you want a doll with Alissa’s hair color and dressed in her favorite colors, you can have exactly that!

If you’re interested in ordering something soon, just shoot an email to [email protected] and we can talk about the details. Thanks so much for your interest!
