summer camp day

She was so excited she said goodbye to both David and me at the front door of our house, before we got in the car to go.  “So you’re driving yourself?” I asked.  She giggled.

Our local nature center offers summer camps, and this year she was old enough to be a “Nederbug”.  It was her very first whole day away from me (8 am till 3:30 pm!) and although I was pretty sure she’d be ok, it was me I wasn’t so sure about.  Looking at these pictures, I realize how very grown up she is.  Sometimes I forget that (even though she reminds me constantly).

I packed her a lunch worthy of Albert in Bread and Jam for Francis: half a ham-cheese-and-mustard sandwich on wheat, 2 small cheese quesadillas, 2 turkey jerky sticks cut in two, a green apple, an apricot, a little container of goat cheese and a fork to eat it with, 2 gummy bear vitamins, 2 Clif Z bars, a homemade brownie, and a very large bottle of water.

Besides lunch, I packed her sandals, sunscreen, sunglasses, and an extra pair of underwear (well, you never know, right? She does have a reputation for laughing a little too hard.)

She didn’t care about any of that, of course.  She grabbed her only slightly bulging backpack, barely let me snap these pictures, and was off to explore bugs and centipedes and all that crawly stuff she loves/hates. A bittersweet milestone to me; just another great day of living to her.
