from the knitting basket: finishing up

Some knitting projects just take a whole lot longer than planned. But that can be a very good thing, because as you may have guessed, I love to knit.

Really, there is nothing like knitting. You can knit while you’re waiting at the DMV, you can knit when it’s raining outside, you can knit with your feet up when you want to relax at the end of a long day.  And here’s a little-known fact: you can even knit in the tub (along with some quietly funky music).

I’ve been working on a little project for a couple of months now…and it’s almost done. When I started, it really did look simple enough. Straight lines, lots of garter stitches, definitely easy-peasy.

Little did I know, I’d be knitting in the Jeep all the way to Santa Fe and back twice, and then every day, sometimes for hours – at the playground, in bookstore play areas, at home reading tons and tons of library books to Zia, on every car trip that was longer than 10 minutes.

(Actually, I did take one extended break because I didn’t know you could take needles on an airplane – what a pity. But I’m sure all those sitting around me, especially David, would be grateful not to hear click, click all the way to New York and back.)

I’ve clocked well over a hundred hours on this sweet little project in the past 2 months. And I thought it would be fast. Hm.

But honestly, I’ve loved every minute of it. From picking all the most beautiful colors in the shop, to the feel of pure cotton running through my fingers, to the dozen-or-so new stitches I’ve learned (well maybe not quite that many) to seeing it all take shape the closer I get to the end.

Then again, there may have been a few things that tested my patience – knitting several pieces and then deciding a different but oh-so-similar color would work better; unknotting a few tangles that could have been avoided with a little thoughtfulness on my part; the frustration of running out of one certain color and searching every store in Colorado (or almost) without success (why didn’t I just buy an extra skein?); trying to learn a new stitch – more than once – and finally giving up and substituting a familiar one. And wondering, just once or twice, why did I ever start this?

And now it’s almost finished. Soon I’ll show you the whole thing, but until then, I’ll be knitting happily away…and loving every second of it.
