3 reddilocks and the bear

This evening just before 6:00, I popped Cash into his jogging stroller, called for Zia and the three of us strolled up the driveway. We were waiting for David so we could all take a walk, and Zia asked if she could go “rock climbing” up the side of the hill.

I said sure, and then heard a crashing on my other side, maybe 20 feet away.  I looked over, and there was a bear–a big one.  He was charging down the hill away from us, probably frightened by the sound of my voice.  (Who says a bear can’t run downhill?)

I froze and called Zia.  By the time she got back to me–has she ever moved so slowly?–David was coming out of the house, and I unbuckled Cash from the jogger.  I pointed at the bear, who had slowed down.

David’s eyes popped and he motioned us into the house.  I grabbed my camera, he grabbed his gun, and we headed back out to see if we could get a shot (with the camera, of course).

The bear was still there, and when David called to him he turned to look at us.  I only snapped one picture before he disappeared into the bushes.  Needless to say, we went for our walk armed with a .45 revolver.

We’ve seen black bear around here before, but never one so big, moving so fast.  I’m so glad it was running away from us.  I would have had to turn into a mother bear myself and defend my little cubs, you know.

That ol’ bear would have surely limped away licking his wounds, poor thing.

Never a dull moment in this neck o’ the woods!

Wow! We had a large black bear on our game camera last fall… not in person, thank goodness.

Oh my, so scary! You guys are awesomely brave to continue on your walk rather than let a bear keep you indoors. I originally come from Idaho, so I know what it’s like to walk the woods with potentially ferocious critters, with at least one member of the party carrying a gun ; ) Stay safe!

OK, I would have probably peed myself in all that and I’m woman enough to admit it.
